I'm in the subway station in New York City when I see the train pull in and stop. The doors open and I want to capture this long length of the train with its doors open waiting for passengers. What I didn't expect is to have the focus of the photo be the guy that was staring straight at me from the open subway car door.
It was an entirely random shot. I would usually never take a photo in such dim light like this with the ISO so low, but there was no other way. The subway stations are dark. They're underground after all. People were moving all around and I waited for the time when there were the fewest people on the platform. They had all gotten into the subway car already.
In post-processing this image, I made the guy that was staring straight at me from the open subway car door the focal point. I lightened the area around him and darkened the rest just a bit. I thought about removing the lady walking from the photo, but she gave a sense of balance to the photo by being there. There is an element of strength from the man and vulnerability from the woman that I like in this composition.
Riding the subway in New York City is an experience. Everyone should try it at least once in their lifetimes. You never know what to expect.
