Standing on the pier at Holland, Michigan on a foggy day, I saw this boat about to power up and head out into Lake Michigan. It was going right into the fog. I had taken this photo before they got out of sight and the background of pure fogginess helped make the image even better.
It was tough to see where the horizon was in this photo and the composition was a bit complex. I settled on a 2:1 aspect ratio so that I could get away with putting the horizon line close to the center. I put the horizon just below the upper golden horizontal line, but not right in the center. You can get away with the horizon being a bit closer to center in a stretched aspect ratio image like this one and it worked on this one.
I enhanced the contrast of the wake from the boat because I wanted it to stand out. I kept the ship and wake in high detail, but the rest were obscured by mist and fog and without much detail. This draws the eye into the image from the foreground toward the boat and then gives contrast with the background. The line of the wake goes almost horizontal then abruptly hooks left. This gives the look of the boat powering up and getting ready to take off into the fog and is what I wanted to show.
The fog that spring day didn't lift for hours. It was almost noon before it started to clear. The sun was out later and I had a great day at the beach and walking the pier in Holland, Michigan.
