Dawn Beach is on the island of Saint Marten. It is on the Dutch side in Sint Maarten. This was mid-morning at around 10 AM and because everyone takes their time getting up on this island, there was no one on this beach at all. It was beautiful, sunny, and windy. You can see the palm tree on the right bending in the wind as it blew salty air off the Atlantic Ocean. I could smell the salt in the air and the morning sun felt warm and refreshing.
It was sunny and the glare off of the water was definitely going to be a part of this photo. I used the camera's built in creative mode for beach scenes, and it worked well. I wanted to get the building and tree on the right in the frame because it shows the scale. The beach material and footprints in the sand winding their way toward the building and tree leads the eye up the beach. The far islands were visible in the glare and I even caught a relatively big wave in the scene out there as well.
I added some sunlight effects to the photo in post processing it. This made it look more like it did while I was standing there with the sun glinting off of every wave in the water right at me. What this did was soften the harshness of the sunlight into something more like you would see if you were squinting to see, as I was that day. It gave it a glow and haze effect. I adjusted levels and lightened the building and tree at the right top of the frame because they were a bit too dark due to the camera's metering.
It is hard for me to fit into a photo the feeling that I had while there. This one is no exception. If I could put the smell of the salty air, the warm feeling of the sun on my face, and the spray of water ever so gently hitting my bare legs that morning, into this image,
