The West Thumb Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park is an active volcanic area that sits on Yellowstone Lake. It was overcast and cloudy the day I was there and the light wasn't very good for photos. However, the steaming landscape that I caught in this picture was briefly illuminated by the sun through the clouds from overhead, and it looked like a scene right out of Hell.
I took this shot quickly and without thinking too much about it. It just appeared for a few seconds. I have photos taken moments after it of the same area, and it looks entirely different. It was truly a lucky shot.
I lightened the center of the photo a bit, but otherwise, it is just as I saw it on that day. You will see some grain in the image, and that is because of the mist in the air. It was nearly raining that day and I kept my camera inside my raincoat almost all day except to take a shot.
Yellowstone is a wonderland for photography. If you're interested in getting some unusual landscape shots like this one, Yellowstone National Park is the place to be.
