I was driving on a Sunday morning near the corner of Linn Road and Zimmer Road in Williamston, Michigan. (GPS Coordinates: 4240'29" N 8418'44" W.) This bright red New Holland baling equipment caught my eye and stood out in the green of the field. I had to take a photo of it.
I pulled over, rolled my passenger-side window down, and pulled out my camera. Leaning over, I shot out the window and took a few photos.
I placed the horizon on the top golden mean line and lined up the baling equipment on the intersection with the right vertical golden mean line. (I often use "golden mean" lines instead of "rule of thirds" lines.) The distant tree then came to be right in the middle top of the image. This made a good composition. I took two shots - one close-up (narrow-angle, 35 mm) and another farther away (wide-angle, 26 mm). I ended up using the close-up one.
When I got back and started processing the images, I found that the sky was a problem. It was completely gray and empty of clouds. I wanted to keep the foreground and horizon because of the slight fog that made the image interesting but lose that dull sky. I substituted a sky from a different photo into the background and adjusted its coloration to match the foreground.
This made for a much better photo. Both sky and foreground were taken in the about the same place but on different days, so they matched up well together.
Sometimes the elements of a picture come together at various times or on different days. The tricky part is to be able to see the same photos taken on different days and know that parts of each would combine to make a better overall image. I hope you like it.
